The evidence further establishes that Mr. Vanderwood’s documented PTSD was never meaningfully incorporated into the resolution of his criminal case. This omission is significant because California law has since evolved through Assembly Bill 124 and related amendments to the Penal Code, requiring courts to give substantial weight to trauma as a mitigating factor during sentencing when supported by the evidence.

Justice requires more than punishment. It also requires recognizing genuine rehabilitation and the remarkable capacity for change. After almost a decade of incarceration, Michael Vanderwood has demonstrated that transformation through his actions, his accountability, and his unwavering commitment to serving others.

For these reasons, we respectfully ask the California authorities to support Michael Vanderwood’s resentencing and request that the Riverside County Superior Court grant relief consistent with California law and the interests of justice.
